Dempsey’s spokesman confirmed Monday that options against IS were under review and stressed the need to form “a coalition of capable regional and European partners.” IS released a video last week of the beheading, apparently in Syria, of American photojournalist James Foley. During the video, a black-clad figure said the execution was in retaliation for the bombings. The execution prompted further bombings . The U.S. administration vowed to defeat the group, calling it a “cancer” that needs to be eliminated. At the daily White House press briefing, spokesman Josh Earnest said Obama has yet to make a decision on whether to widen the bombing mission.

Saturday’s order follows widespread criticism of local authorities’ use of military gear in Ferguson, Missouri after the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white police officer. Police there met protests with a massive show force — body armor-clad officers perched on armored trucks toting stun grenades and assault rifles — thanks to their access to such US military hardware. Obama “has directed a review of federal programs and funding that enable state and local law enforcement to purchase military equipment.” The review will consider “whether these programs are appropriate,” whether training with the equipment is sufficient, and whether there is enough federal oversight of the gear’s use. The investigation will be headed by “White House staff including the Domestic Policy Council, the National Security Council, the Office of Management and Budget,” the official added. Michael Brown’s funeral, set to take place Monday, is likely to be a focal point for more demonstrations by angry protesters demanding that Darren Wilson, the policeman who pulled the shot the teenager at least six times, face justice.

On Monday, Syria warned the U.S. that it needed to coordinate airstrikes against the Islamic State or it would view them as a breach of its sovereignty and an act of aggression. But it signaled its readiness to work with the United States in a coordinated campaign against the militants. The reconnaissance flights would not be the first time the United States has entered Syrian air space without seeking permission. In July, U.S.

Bill Clinton admitted to an inappropriate relationship with Monica Lewinski in August of 1998 and days later ordered air strikes against terrorist bases in Afghanistan in retaliation for the bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania earlier in the month. For Obama, it’s the overseas trouble spots in Iraq and Syria and along Ukraine’s eastern border that present the president with his most immediate challenge pushing U.S. allies beyond their comfort level to confront Russia and the Islamic State militants. Obama, who has already ordered limited air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq, now must decide whether to expand that fight into Syria a step he has previously been reluctant to take. The U.S.

Some political observers are asking why Obama can’t seem to speak for himself on race. Many observers argue that Holder often talks frankly about race when the president can’t or won’t. Speaking at a Thursday press conference, Holder said, “This has engendered a conversation that I think we ought to have, but we can’t stop at that conversation.” Earlier in the week, Holder became the highest-ranking administration official to visit Ferguson. He met with Brown’s parents, community leaders and regular citizens. At a local diner, he explained to residents why he came to their troubled town. “We want to help as best we can.
